May 17, 2012

IDAHO Day originated from Louis Georges-Tin, a French university lecturer, editor and campaigner for Black and GLBT rights who launched an appeal for universal recognition of the International Day Against Homophobia. He proposed that this date be fixed on May 17th each year, in commemoration of World Health Organization’s decision to delete homosexuality from the list of mental disorders. As a result, 24,000 people worldwide had signed the “IDAHO appeal” on May 17, 2005 and some activities worldwide followed through. The following year, May 17, 2006, IDAHO had garnered support from several Nobel Prize winners (Desmond Tutu, Amartya Sen, Elfriede Jelinek, Dario Fo, José Saramago), artists (Merryl Streep, Cindy Lauper, Elton John, David Bowie), intellectuals (Noam Chomsky, Judith Butler, Bernard-Henri Lévy), NGOs (ILGA, FIDH), and many others.

Today is the day that we all eliminate discrimination, domination and this silent fear that castrated our emotions and locked us up in a prison of exclusion and disengagement.

Today is the day for our voices to be heard in unity, as a step to fray away from stereotyped gender roles and socially inclined and preconceived behaviours and desires.

Today is the day that we foster and reinvent ways of coming together and collaborating with each other in real bonds to achieve excellence not only here in the workplace but also outside its realms.

Again, today, May 17th, is IDAHO Day - International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia; the day we celebrate this new vision.

“Just as you have the instinctive natural desire to be happy and overcome suffering, so do all sentient beings; just as you have the right to fulfill this innate aspiration, so do all sentient beings. So on what grounds do you discriminate?”
- Dalai Lama

“You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. Where there is love, there is life.”
- Gandhi

“The world is filled with pain and suffering; therefore, we must support our basic human right to love and be loved.”
- Madonna

“Homosexuality is not the problem; Prejudice is the problem.”
Ricky Martin

“When you call someone a ’fag’, it identifies them with a group, a group that in today’s climate is open to harassment. So by calling someone a ’fag’, you are giving yourself and the people around you the license to either damage this individual verbally or physically.”
- Judy Shepard

Who is that "gay" I see staring straight back at me...?

Why is my reflection someone I don't know?

Must I pretend that I'm someone else for all time?

When will my reflection show...who I am inside?
