The real truth about Inverters

The inside scoop on this innovative cooling technology

This summer, consumers are sure to be extra picky when it comes to cooling their homes and work places. It’s already shaping up to be a hot season, and people want an air conditioner that provides them a cool and comfortable indoor environment. But beyond cool comfort, consumers want an air con that saves on energy, and saves on expenses—especially with the rising cost of electricity!

Nowadays, inverters are touted as the air conditioning industry’s answer to our need for cool spaces and low expenses. You may have already heard claims about certain inverters providing “up to 50% savings” in energy bills, and these claims are indeed quite enticing. But are they true? Are they really energy efficient in the first place? And how do these things work anyway?

Let’s take a closer look at inverters and answer some frequently asked questions, to see if they live up to the hype:

How does an inverter work?

Let’s say you’re driving down Commonwealth Avenue, and you wish to maintain a reasonable speed—not too slow, and not too fast (you wouldn’t want a speeding ticket). You decide to drive at the speed limit of 60 KPH. Now some sections of Commonwealth are downhill, while some are uphill.

To maintain your desired speed, you need to step on the gas a little harder when climbing, and ease up on the gas pedal when going downhill. In effect, you use more gas when going uphill, but less gas when going downhill.

An inverter works much the same way. It tells the compressor to either work harder or ease up, depending on outside temperatures. If it is hot outside, the compressor runs faster; if it’s cool outdoors, it runs slower.

Is an inverter efficient?

Thanks to the inverter, the compressor performs just the right amount of work, at any given time, to keep your room cool and comfortable. This system is vastly different from traditional air conditioners, whose compressors are periodically turned on (at maximum capacity) or off to control your room’s temperature.

The start-stop cycle of conventional air-cons can use up plenty of energy, and create fluctuations in power supply load, especially when the air-con is running for long periods. By allowing the compressor to “modulate” instead of making frequent start-stops, the inverter becomes more energy-efficient, and less expensive to run, than fixed-speed air-cons in many cases.

Is an inverter right for me?

Inverters are designed for efficiency, but whether or not you should use one depends on a few conditions. For instance, you get the most benefits and savings out of an inverter if you typically use your air-con at night for 4 hours or more, since the compressor works less hard under these conditions. You will also get the same benefits if you live in a place with cool outdoor temperatures.

You can also reap plenty of benefits from an inverter if you use it in spaces with frequent opening and closing of doors, and where the number of people inside changes often, such as in offices and class rooms. The inverter is the ideal cooling solution for these situations, because it can quickly adjust to fast changes in cooling demand.

Of course, for places that have their air-conditioning turned on 24/7, such as in call centers and convenience stores, an inverter can do wonders in energy savings. And for households that require daily or nightly air conditioning for long hours, an inverter is the best choice as well. If you need an air con for only short amounts of time, a fixed-speed air con may be the better option for you.

How much savings can I get from an inverter?

We’ve established that inverters can save energy, but are energy claims actually enough? The fact is there are currently no standard testing parameters to determine exactly how much you can actually save using a particular inverter brand or product.
